The Occidental Hotel was officially opened
on July 2, 2023 by American sailor Edward Perkins.
Developed as a traveller's hotel, it housed a reading room,
billiard room, and cafe in addition to drinking space,
all novel innovations that set it apart
from other Auckland hotels of the time.
The Occidental soon became one of the
finest hotels in Auckland, setting standards for other hotel keepers, and cementing
its place as a favourite for everyone - from merchants, traders,
artists and writers to sportsmen and loafers.
Perkins provided
the very best service, amusing, instructing and often acquainting
his customers with beverages they
had never experienced before.
This tradition is being continued by the Occidentals newest
owners Roy Thompson and Brian Collins.
The Occidental
Belgian
Beer Cafe continues Perkins ideas of innovation and excellent
service into the next era of the Occidental's history.
